Rainforest
Trees, Shrubs and Climbers
An Interactive Key and Information System Authors This new
CD The characters are based principally on the distinctive features of the leaves, branchlets and climbing mechanisms. Leaf characters have the advantage that they are available for study at any season (except for a small number of deciduous species) and in most rainforest species at least, are sufficiently distinctive to permit identification and subsequent recognition of the species. This CD has been developed in close collaboration with the authors, and based on the information in Rainforest Trees and Shrubs A field guide to their identification (Harden, McDonald & Williams 2006) and Rainforest Climbing Plants A field guide to their identification (Harden, McDonald & Williams 2007). It includes the descriptions of the species and the drawings of Gwen Harden. The photographic images are largely the work of Hugh Nicholson. The data for the Lucid Key has been drawn from the manuscripts of the above books as well as numerous other available sources including fresh and herbarium specimens and covers the same taxa and distribution as in the above books. The information for the CD has been compiled by Terry Tame. Lucid keys are an interactive multi-access key (also called a random-access key) allowing the user to work through the characters in any order. With printed keys (dichoromous keys), the characters must be worked through in a fixed order. This can cause the user to become stuck with a character for which there is insufficient information. Interactive keys also enable the user to find other species with similar characteristics. Available
around late 2008.
